What to expect at lessons

Please do not give your child anything to eat or drink for 2 hours prior to lessons. If this is not possible, please text Bonnie with your concerns so she can help you come up with a plan.

Your child may be upset and fuss on the first day. Please remember that these emotions do not mean your child is fearful. Crying is often a child's only form of communication and can mean a variety of things. We are all a little nervous when we attempt a new skill. Then, as our skill level increases and we can meet the challenges at hand, we can begin to enjoy the experience. The goal is to set students up for success as often as possible throughout lessons, so that they can build trust in me and confidence in themselves.

After the lesson, please lay one of your towels down on the pool deck. I will place your child on top of it. Use a 2nd towel to cover and dry your child. Drying their head first will help them warm up quickly. Allow them to rest there for a few minutes, so they can readjust their equilibrium after emerging form the water.

What to bring to lessons

  • If your child has not been potty trained for at least 6 months, please use a non-disposable swim diaper for your child's lessons.

These diapers can be purchased at Toys R Us, Target, and many online retailers.

  • You will use one towel to create a clean, dry surface on the pool deck for your child to lay on after lessons. The 2nd towel will be used to cover and dry your child.

  • You are welcome to bring snacks for your child to eat after the lesson is complete. Yay snacks!

As the parent, you are the best cheerleader your child could ask for!

You are welcome to sit at the side of the pool during your child's lessons. It is important to praise and encourage your child as they are learning.

Starting lessons for the first time can be a bit nerve-wracking for students and parents alike, and that's okay!

Please talk to Bonnie if you have concerns at any time (or if you just need a parent-to-parent pep talk).
